I am Mathew Baas, a machine learning researcher. I currently lead research and development at Camb.AI.

I completed my Electronic Engineering PhD at Stellenbosch University. I am a part of the media lab in the Stellenbosch E&E Engineering department. I am in the LSL research group under my PhD supervisor Herman Kamper.

I sometimes post about deep learning, electronics, and other things I find interesting.

Academic affiliations

Formal study:

• Stellenbosch University: I completed my undergraduate B. Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering cum laude in 2020, receiving the Chancellor’s Medal.
• Stellenbosch University: I started my Electronic Engineering Master’s degree in 2021.
• Stellenbosch University: In late 2022, I upgraded my Master’s degree to a PhD degree.
• Stellenbosch University: I completed my PhD degree in Electronic Engineering in mid 2024.

Scholarships:

• DW Ackermann Bursary: recipient of the DW Ackermann bursary in 2020.
• Harry Crossley Foundation: recipient of the Harry Crossley scholarship in 2021-2023.
